From Boring Grey Rectangle to Moody Romantic Haven: My Bedroom Makeover

When we moved into our home, the bedroom was nothing more than a plain grey rectangle - the kind of space that felt more like a blank waiting room than a cozy retreat.
The Mockup:
I knew from the beginning that I wanted to create something that felt moody, romantic, and cocoon-like. A place where mornings would be hard to leave and evenings would feel like a warm embrace.
A Color-Drenched Dream
The transformation started with color - deep, rich, and unapologetically bold. I chose Behr’s “Rumors,” a sultry deep red, and color drenched the entire space. That means walls, trim, doors, ceiling, all of it got a dose of drama. I used flat paint on the walls for a soft, velvety look and contrasted it with semi-gloss on the trim, doors, and crown molding for a bit of shine and dimension. This was my first time using my paint sprayer for a whole room. And while the prep was A LOT, it was definitely a time and body saver.
Wallpaper Magic in the Tray Ceiling
Above the bed, our tray ceiling was begging for a moment, so I gave it one. I found a gorgeous snake and floral wallpaper, had it custom color matched to Behr Rumors, and wallpapered just the inner tray. I’ve never hung wallpaper on the ceiling before and I can tell you- have a buddy. It went so much better with my best friend helping. Not only was she truly the MVP just by being an extra set of hands, she also made it so much more fun. The result is a little secret garden above the bed- sultry and enchanting without overwhelming the space.
I also decided to paint the vent covers so they didn’t distract from the gorgeous wallpaper.

My First Foray Into Moulding
To add even more depth and detail, I installed picture frame moulding all around the room which was my very first attempt! After painting the moulding in the same semi-gloss finish as the trim, it added a subtle contrast that catches the light and makes the walls feel layered and thoughtfully designed.
A Reading Nook You’ll Never Want to Leave
Every moody bedroom needs a cozy reading nook, right? I created one with custom shelves made from 1x10s, gently curved at the ends for a softer look. I painted them the same deep red as the walls and used floating shelf brackets to keep things looking sleek and built-in. I found the cutest leopard print chair on Facebook marketplace and a little gold side table from Homegoods. It’s the perfect little escape within a room already designed for unwinding.
Lighting, Windows, and a Few Game-Changers
I also made some functional (and fabulous) upgrades. The basic ceiling fan was replaced with a white linen fandelier. It cools the room but looks like an elegant light fixture. I swapped our old, broken blinds for motorized shades, which feel like such a luxe touch and make adjusting the lighting a breeze. And because I can’t resist bringing in greenery, I added hooks to the windows for hanging plants, which breathe life and softness into the room.
The Furniture Glow-Up
With all the architectural details set, it was time to upgrade the furniture. I scored a new bed frame from a local liquidator (seriously, best find ever!) and finally had the space to add proper side tables, which I found on Amazon. After our previous setup, where we could barely squeeze in a nightstand, these feel like a luxury.
I also added a new dresser that fits the room so much better and swapped in a snake-patterned rug from Ruggable that ties the whole moody theme together. Finishing touches include blush velvet curtains hung with pinch pleat hooks because drapery deserves drama, too.
Now, this room has become everything I dreamed of and more. It’s moody, cozy, romantic, and full of personality. It’s the kind of place that wraps around you like a favorite book or a rainy Sunday. I’ve officially made it impossible to leave the bed in the morning and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
