Bathroom Makeover: Turning a Boring Bathroom Into a Functional Space I Actually Love
My bedroom has become one of my favorite rooms in the house. It’s cozy, pretty, and feels like me. Unfortunately, the bathroom attached to it didn’t get the memo.
The bathroom was builder-basic, lacked personality, and had one major problem: wasted space. And if there’s one thing I dislike in a home, it’s wasted storage. Since this is the bathroom where I get ready every day, I wanted it to be both beautiful and functional.
So I decided it was time for a makeover.
The Plan
Before I started, I created a mockup so I could visualize the finished space. My goal was to make the room feel more custom and intentional while adding much-needed storage.
The plan included:
● Painting the vanity
● Adding wallpaper
● Building a storage cabinet between the mirrors
● Replacing the mirrors
● Updating the light fixtures
● Potentially replacing the faucets
● Finishing everything off with decor and accessories
I wanted the space to feel collected and custom without doing a full renovation.
Painting the Vanity
The vanity was the first thing to tackle.
I’ve painted enough cabinets at this point that my process is pretty straightforward:
1. Clean thoroughly
2. Scuff sand
3. Clean again
4. Apply three coats of enamel paint
It’s not the most exciting part of a makeover, but it’s one of the most impactful. A fresh coat of paint can completely transform a builder-grade vanity.
I used the shade Grape Leaves by PPG but had it color matched in Behr cabinet enamel
I also painted the walls Behr whipped cream.
I know, that probably sounds like an odd choice when the room already felt bland. But I wanted a brighter space, especially since this is where I get ready each morning. Plus, I knew wallpaper, wood tones, mirrors, and lighting would be bringing plenty of character later.
Sometimes a neutral backdrop allows the fun elements to shine.
